Description

While tidying up my studio, I came across this rose painting and it made me smile.

This was actually the very first rose I painted for the Rose Terrace tea room at Vergelegen Wine Estate in 2023. At the time, I was working through what would become a collection of twelve roses. After completing most of them, I decided this particular stem felt too structured and didn’t quite match the natural, organic movement of the others. So… I scrapped it.

Instead, I painted a thirteenth rose and sent twelve off to the tea room, leaving this one behind. Finding it again now, I actually don’t mind it at all. In fact, I quite like it.

Maybe it was never meant to be part of the collection, just a quiet little reminder of where it all began. Proof that even the “almosts” have their own beauty.
